In some ways, Prabal Gurung’s Fall 2011 collection was a complete departure from his Spring, and in some ways it was characteristically Gurung. Just as in his Spring collection, Fall was filled with sexy, closely-fitting dresses, but this time around, the designer went for romantic, sensuous colors and materials. Gurung’s Spring girl would have no problem changing into his Fall looks, but the minimal and simple constructions of Spring were gone–as they were across all the runways of New York–in favor of a more grown up girl.
All of Gurung’s Fall looks were strong, and indeed, his Fall collection did feel more coherent and prolific than his Spring. Perhaps this is just the evolution of the young designer, or perhaps the simple, energetic collections we saw in Spring were simply that, Spring collections, and now, designers across the board are buckling down for another cold winter.
