Athens-born designer Mary Katrantzou skims the line of mixed media when it comes to her digital print based designs. During her emergence as an artist, Katrantzou studied digital printmaking and Photoshop—two skills utilized during her fashion design process. Her style is unmistakably unique as she combines bold, busy hand-constructed patterns with unlikely color combinations. One would expect this description to apply to something chaotic and too-hard-for-the-eyes, but actually, her combinations translate into aesthetics of regality. Katrantzou prints play with both 2-dimentional and 3-dimentional texture; she employs her graphics with realistic shading to make the images stand out, while she uses a multitude of textures in her garments including cashmere, satin, chiffon, silk paired with jewel and stone accents. Katrantzou thematically designs each of her collections beginning with one bold image that she elaborates and tailors based on the female figure. The result? A beautifully ornate yet architecturally feminine collection. Art and objects in the homes of the elite inspired her Fall/Winter 2011 collection, so it makes sense that one signature accent in her collection is called the “lampshade skirt.”
