A funny?
A few of my pieces were on one episode of Gossip Girl! I was so excited and had people over to watch because we were thinking Serena was going to be wearing my stuff. No…Serena ripped one of my capes out of a closet and threw it at Blair. I sent around 20 pieces to them in total, and they kept them for nearly 2 months…and used one. But, I guess they probably didn’t have time to worry about little ‘ole me when Valentino needed to be boxed up and returned perfectly. They’re cool, though. The experience was great.

Colors for 2012?
I have an issue with color. I love it, but I personally don’t wear a lot of it. So, when I’m designing, it’s really hard for me…it’s so final. Like if you make something red…that shit is just red! But, for the upcoming seasons I’m forcing myself to really incorporate more…I’m also obsessed with mismatched prints and green, as well.

Shapes for 2012?
I love the hard meets soft…tough meets tender look. Flowers and chains! Lace and fishnets! Totally into it!

The World of Julianna Bass

When are you finally satisfied with a design?
I tweak and obsess over things no doubt! But, when I start to see what I envisioned initially…then I mellow out a bit. There’s a point when you step back and say…THAT’S IT….now walk away. There are also things you work on for so long that you end up hating. Those are filed away or paired with some equally dramatic accessories.

New York City?
Yes…I’m a Brooklyn girl. I have no plans to ever leave New York. (I mean, unless London calls, that is.)

Is there still some Tennessee in you?
Hell yes, just listen to me! My family and I are so close…but I definitely couldn’t live there. And, I tried for a year to rid myself of this accent, but eventually I just realized…it’s me. Tennessee is in me. It’s who I am.

Free time?
I’m a social butterfly for sure, and sometimes funtimes take precedence over work….ooops. But, I also love my down time, as well. I’m really into watching documentaries, and stories about fanatics of any kind. Fat camps, religious fanatics, mountain people. Anybody with sick obsessions….love it.

What matters to you most as a designer?
Maintaining my signature look is very important. Keeping your integrity in check….duh. And, keeping it honest and real is crucial.
