Gabriella Marina Gonzalez is in a league of her own. Graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2009, the young British designer has quickly become a key player in the avant-garde fashion game, due to her knack for developing otherworldly accessories that are equal parts gifted and twisted. She’s dressed fashion mavens like Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Fergie, and her collections have been featured in magazines like i-D, Tank, Zoo, and Vice. Intricately knitted macramé pieces, obscenely high platforms, complicated leather harnesses, and chained jewelry make up GMG’s fascinating world – and she’s only getting started. Read on for our chat with one of today’s most innovative talents.
Describe your last vivid dream:
Last night, I dreamt that I was on a beach that resembled the Grand Canyon in color and shape but the hills were made of sand instead of rock. I was sliding and crawling, desperately searching for an important friend in the distance, but never quite making it to them on time. When I finally reached over these canyons to the ocean I arrived at a pier full of families looking at seals over the edge and throwing rocks at the sea lions that were trying to devour them whole. Then I waded through the seawater until I was in the middle of nowhere, water all around me. I reached a grassy hill in the middle of the shallow sea. It had a single willow tree on it for shelter, so I sat under it and just stayed there. The weirdest thing about this dream is that I know exactly what it means.
That is some strong cinematic imagery. What movie would you have loved to style?
Alejandro Jodorowsky’s, The Holy Mountain:
Which fashion era do you connect with the most?
Neolithic.
Describe the inspiration behind your latest collection, Sinister Sights in Synthetic Moonlight:
It started off as a married interpretation of Dante’s Inferno and stories of banished angels. It has taken a turn into the exploration of the human life cycle and afterlife in general.
Who would be your dream collaborator, dead or alive?
Federico Fellini:
Gabriella Marina Gonzalez’s designs can be purchased online and in-store at Machine-A.
